For nearly two and half years, I have been writing about how two major foreclosure mills based in Michigan have been committing document fraud in close to a half dozen states and how they have escaped the scrutiny of two Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette and his predecessor, Mike Cox because of their political ties and contributions to both their respective political campaigns and contributions to the Michigan Republican Party.

According to the February edition of the California Bar Journal, in an article written by State Bar president Patrick Kelly, the State Bar of California has offered to administer a $10 million grant program that will make $9 million available to provide legal representation to California families facing foreclosure.

On Thursday, Lender Processing Services along with its subsidiaries, LPS Default Solutions and DocX reached a multi-state settlement to resolve allegations of unlawful foreclosure practices and robo-signing for $121 million.  The agreement stipulates that LPS and its subsidiaries to reform their business practices and, if necessary, to correct documents it improperly executed that harmed homeowners.

As part of the settlement, LPS admitted that DocX committed so-called “surrogate signing,” which is a softer way of admitting to “robo-signing”.  Robo-signing which is the signing of documents by unauthorized individuals in the name of another and notarizing those documents as if they had been signed by the proper person.

My mother was always a very understanding person.  She used to say things like, “Everyone makes mistakes.,” or, “Mistakes happen,”  whenever something inadvertently got screwed up.  And as parent, I’ve heard the same words come out of my own mouth too.

But, everything has its limits, right?  I mean, I don’t think my mom would have said, “everyone makes mistakes,” if someone driving down our street had accidentally run over one of her children.  Or, if she was getting her hair done at the salon and her stylist accidentally set her hair on fire… somehow I don’t hear her saying, “oh, it’s okay… mistakes happen.”

Information received since the Federal Open Market Committee met in December suggests that growth in economic activity paused in recent months, in large part because of weather-related disruptions and other transitory factors.

Damn that weather… and other transitory factors.  It’s just killing our economic recovery.  At least the ongoing foreclosure filings and repossessions still aren’t a problem.
